The tier you choose should match who's wearing the pin and how visible it'll be. An intern orientation kit doesn't need executive-grade pins. A 25-year service award absolutely does.

Optional magnetic backing to protect suit

Standard butterfly clutch backings work fine on casual wear. They're cheap and familiar. But on a $3,000 suit? Nobody wants to punch a hole through their Loro Piana.

Magnetic lapel pin backs solve this problem completely. Two strong rare-earth magnets — one behind the fabric, one on the pin — hold the pin firmly in place without any perforation. The pin looks identical from the front. The jacket stays intact.

There are legitimate trade-offs. Magnetic backs add $0.30–0.60 per pin in production cost. They can't hold pins heavier than about 15 grams (which rules out very large or thick die-cast designs). And they interfere with pacemakers, so if you're distributing to a broad audience, you'll want to include a note about that.
